Summary
In "On Love," Jane and Dr. Thompson visit with each other, and Jane inquires about Dr. Thompson's marriage with Lett. Dr. Thompson describes how they met and, while they did love each other, he suspected he "'just wasn't entirely the right man for her'" (222). They also discuss Jane's relationship with Elijah Key, with the doctor admitting that he likely should not have said anything to Elijah.
In the second half of the chapter, Grace and Jane have a conversation at their kitchen table. We are told that this conversation takes place in 1938, meaning Jane is 22 or 23. Grace's dry cleaning business has failed and Grace announces that she is going to work at a brothel run by Miss Minnie -- although Grace will be working as a business manager, not as a prostitute.
