Summary
In the chapter "Grace in the Wilderness," we learn that Grace is increasingly eager to leave the family farm, and also begins to come home later and later, against the family rules. One day, Grace explains that she left her homework at school, and brings along Jane to walk back to the school to retrieve it. However, Grace has hidden the missing homework along the road. Instead, she brings Jane to a secluded clearing and commands Jane to hide quietly and watch what is about to happen. A young man eventually arrives, and he and Grace have what Jane recognizes is sex. When the man leaves and Grace puts her clothes on, they return back to the family barn, where Grace takes a cigarette from her secret stash. Jane expresses bewilderment at what just happened, and Grace explains...
