Summary

In “Miss Ada Keeps a Secret from Daniel,” Ada suffers from the assault. Not wanting to upset Emily, Ada only admits to her that Patrick snuck into her room and slapped her. However, Austin figures it out, and he visits Ada and gives her a remedy to prompt her bleeding and prevent pregnancy. She grows distant from Daniel, not wanting to tell him of what happened. In “Miss Emily Ponders Her Brother,” Emily, still a recluse in her room, is worried about Ada, who she overhears singing a sad song in the kitchen. In “Miss Ada Goes to Boston and Chicopee,” Austin notices Ada has a rash on her wrists and sends her to a doctor in Boston. Ashamed, Ada returns from the hospital with a medication for gonorrhea...
