Summary
Pearl is now the narrator, and she notes that Stasha left something out from that first night. There had been a third girl in the bunk with the two of them who died. Another set of twins remove the girl's body, stripping her of her clothes first, which they appropriate for themselves. Stasha and Pearl are referred to as “Zugange” by the other prisoners, meaning “New Numbers” (20). The girls divide up the duties of their new world to try to shoulder an equal burden. Stasha is in charge of “the funny, the future, the bad,” Pearl is in charge of “the sad, the past, the good” (21). Ox brings the girl's body back into the bunk, claiming that Mengele will be upset if anyone is missing for morning count, even if they are dead. Stasha begs Pearl to take responsibility for the future...
