Summary

In Chapter 4, Lafayette and Ty'ree are on the couch. Lafayette is thinking about his past. Charlie had used a gun three years ago to hold up Poncho's candy store. No one knows where the gun came from. Ty'ree and Milagro were at the kitchen table, working on the household budget, and Lafayette had been watching television when the police arrived with the news. Charlie had the gun and 250 dollars in his pocket when he was arrested.

Lafayette's thoughts switch from the day of Charlie's arrest as he asks Ty'ree to tell him about the day their mother died. Ty'ree knows that Lafayette was there and knows what happened, but he relates the story. Ty'ree had graduated the day before, and he was going to the school to get his diploma and say goodbye to some friends. Charlie had been arrested two months earlier...
