The Barbershop

The barbershop is the place where Misha and Uri live prior to exile in the ghetto. Shortly after Uri and Misha meet, Uri brings him back to the barbershop to live with him. While there, the boys' friendship grows. Misha later reflects on their life in the shop as the happy times. They steal seemingly endless amounts of food and fill the cellar. They no few fears and do not want for much while living here.

Janina's House

Janina's house is the first place Misha and Janina meet. Misha first wanders into her family's garden in search of food. While picking their tomatoes, he encounters Janina on the step. After her family goes into hiding, Misha begins leaving them bread on their doorstep. In exchange, Janina leaves Misha small gifts and tokens. The porch of Janina's home marks the peaceful beginnings of their coming friendship.
