Summary

In Chapter 19, Misha sleeps with the other boys under a blanket in the ghetto to keep warm. Ferdi says he does not believe in mothers. Ferdi also says they do not exist because they do not have armbands. One of the streets in the ghetto becomes a market. One day, Misha snatches squirrels and brings them back to Janina's family. Shepsel says they are rats, not squirrels. Janina's parents refuse to eat them. Later Misha finds a hole in the wall through which he can fit.

In Chapter 20, Misha's stolen jar of fish breaks as he pushes through the wall. He shoves it in his pockets and brings it back to Janina's family. They all devour it. Later, the Jackboots drag everyone into the streets. Misha focuses on being still. When he collapses, Janina's father, Mr. Milgrom, tells him to bend his knees...
