Eating Disorder
Rachel’s eating disorder symbolizes how the suppressing of natural desires can cause emotional harm and dysfunction. When Rachel was a child, her mother shamed her about her weight and food intake. As an adult, Rachel struggles with an eating disorder in which she severely polices her own calorie intake. Eventually, she overcomes this disorder, eats normally, and lives more happily.
Clay Sculpture
The clay sculpture symbolizes the insistence of one’s true self. For years, Rachel tries to forcibly alter herself through unhealthy methods such as overly strict diets and denial of her sexuality. However, when she finally gives in to these impulses, she is able to love more happily. She views the clay sculpture as a talisman and physical representation of this journey.
