Summary
In Chapter 44, Rachel and Miriam meet at the same restaurant where they ate before. During the dinner, Rachel again tries to discern whether Miriam is attracted to her. Rachel even begins asking Miriam questions in an attempt to discern whether Miriam is sexually attracted to women at all. In Chapter 45, they go to a movie after dinner. During the movie, Rachel asks Miriam further questions, bordering on outright flirtation. Eventually, Rachel works up the nerve to hold Miriam’s hand. Miriam does not react overtly, but she begins rubbing Rachel’s hand with her fingers. In Chapter 46, after the movie, Rachel flirts with Miriam more overtly and then kisses her. Miriam appears to find the kiss pleasurable. The kiss quickly grows passionate. Eventually, Miriam stops the kiss and says that it is against Orthodox rules for women to have romantic relationships with other women...
