Florida
All of the stories with defined settings take place in Florida. The stories are very character-driven, so there is little physical description of settings. In "Milk Blood Heat," Ava looks out over the city from the rooftop of the Embassy Suites in Jacksonville and observes the Main Street Bridge stretching over the St. Johns River. In "Outside the Raft," the beach Shayla's father takes the kids to is referred to by Shayla as "Jax Beach" (105), and at the beginning of the story she describes the weather as "a typical Floridian summer, both sweltering and sweet" (97). "Necessary Bodies" also seems to take place in Jacksonville, as there is an exhibit at the museum that Billie visits all about the city's history. In "Thicker Than Water," Cecelia, Lucas, and Shelby begin their journey to Santa Fe from Tallahassee where they live.
