Summary

In “The Hearts of Our Enemies,” a woman named Frankie sits outside of a house in the suburbs, thinking about a note she found in her teenage daughter Margot's pants pocket six weeks earlier.

Margot's friend Marissa had slept over the night before. Frankie planned to make the girls crepes when they woke up, but Margot told her they did not want crepes and took a bagel instead. She then asked Frankie to drive them to the mall and Frankie agreed because she felt guilty about what had happened between her and Margot's father, from whom she was separated. After returning from the mall, Frankie entered Margot's bedroom and collected her clothes to do laundry.
