Identity

The authors use of characters and setting to create a unique identity for a very common superhero world. Spider-man is synonymous with New York City, so when crafting a new identity for a new Spider-man the authors stick close to his original roots. Setting the story in Brooklyn allows for both familiarity as well as a new and different city for Spider-man to roam. Identity is an essential part of a superhero, with most keeping a secret identity, as is the case with Miles Morales. However identity in this story goes beyond just keeping his personal identity a secret. It also encompasses a diverse background for Miles as well as a unique identity for the setting of the story.
