Mika Suzuki
Mika is the daughter of Japanese parents, Hiromi and Shige Suzuki. As this novel opens, she is in her mid-30s, has skipped from one job to another, and has not had a serious relationship. Most of Mika's issues can be traced back to two factors – her mother's constant demands and disapproval and a rape that happened when Mika was in college. Mika has never confronted either situation which means she has never begun to heal from those experiences.
Mika has apparently never really worried about her lack of focus or purpose until she receives a phone call from Penny, the daughter she gave up for adoption when Mika was 19. Mika more honestly evaluates her life for the first time at that point, which leads her to lie to Penny about herself, her job, and her relationship. When her friend suggests they make Mika's lies into reality...
