Summary

In Chapter 31, Mika drives several hours to Eugene where Pearl Jam is holding their next concert. Mika begins drinking from the bar in Hana's room. Hana has not seen Mika this frantic since their freshman year in college. Mika just wants to drink in order “to feel nothing, like she had the last sixteen years – it was much safer this way” (325). Hana stops Mika from drinking and demands an explanation. Mika tells Hana about having sex with Thomas, keeping it a secret from Penny, and the trip to the hospital. Mika realizes that Penny had gone out drinking to do the same thing Mika is doing now. Mika forged a relationship with Penny and “did the one thing certain to drive her away” (326).
