Importance: While onboard the Saghani, Franny writes letters to Niall. This quote is an excerpt from one of her notes, in which she details her venture to the Antarctic in pursuit of the terns. The passage is significant in that whenever Franny writes to Niall, she more open, her voice less constricted. In this moment she speaks not only of her love for the wildness of the birds, but references her own untamable spirit. Here the reader is able to trust the reliability of Franny's words, knowing she is most honest with her husband. She confesses her lack of control over herself, an admission she will not verbalize to anyone else.
