Summary

In Part I, Chapter 1, the first person narrator, Franny Lynch, talks about animal extinction. Her husband once showed her the last of the storm petrels.

During nesting season in Greenland, Franny tags three petrels with trackers. After discovering Ennis Malone is the captain of the Saghani, a boat docked in port, she sets out to find him. Though she resents fishermen for their impact on the climate, she needs Ennis's help. On her way through town she encounters a drunk man. Not long later she sits at a bar and watches him throw himself into the sea. Worried when he does not resurface, Franny runs to save him. She feels silly when he says he was sobering up.
