Summary
Chapter 16, "The Knot" examines the myriad of possibilities regarding Bella and Edward's relationship. Edward worries about their day alone, still fearing he might hurt her. They drive to the forest, Edward wondering how Bella will respond to his appearance in the sunlight. Bella, daunted at the prospect of a five mile hike given her clumsiness, does not notice Edward's preoccupation. They continue to conversing until Edward steps into the sunlight.
In Chapter 17, "Confessions" a shocked Bella sees Edward in the light, fearful of his welfare as he resembles a man on fire. Contrary to Edward's apprehension, Bella finds him beautiful. Edward struggles to be near Bella, and the two experiment as Edward gauges his response to her touch.
