The following version of this book was used to create this guide: Meyer, Stephenie. Midnight Sun. Little, Brown and Company, 2020.

Meyer's novel is divided into 29 chapters, following the relationship of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. The relationship is a complicated one, as Bella is human and Edward is a vampire. The work tells the same narrative as Meyer's initial novel involving Edward and Bella, Twilight, however this work traverses the same events from Edward's point of view. As the work opens, Isabella Swan has just moved to Forks, Washington as a result of her mother's recent marriage. Her father, Charlie, is the town's police chief. Initially, Edward is bored with the humans overly enthusiastic response to the new girl, however, once he catches the scent of Bella's extraordinarily sweet blood he fears he may kill her on the spot.

Edward's family has forsaken human blood in order to live more harmoniously with humans. To keep his family's cover, Edward travels to Alaska in an attempt to thwart his heightened desire for Bella's blood. However, in doing so he fears he is a coward and a disappointment. He returns home, and assumes the guise of a high school student again, along with his siblings: Emmett, Rosalie, Alice, and Jasper. Each sibling has special talents and superhuman characteristics, but Edward and Alice possess rather remarkable skills beyond this. Alice has visions of possible futures; Edward can read thoughts. Edward is stymied, however, by Bella as he cannot read her thoughts.

Edward begins to engage with Bella, testing his self control. He contemplates leaving again, but finds Bella in danger as a car careens out of control. Edward uses his vampiric strength to save her, putting his identity at risk. Bella becomes keenly aware of his unusual strength. He then ignores her hoping she will drop the matter. His siblings are concerned she will expose them, particularly Rose who offers to kill Bella. Edward continues to watch Bella through the eyes of others, and develops a romantic attraction in addition to his predatory one.

The two begin to get to know one another through a series of questions and Edward often watches over her as she sleeps. Edward ponders if a relationship with her is too dangerous. When Bella goes to Port Angeles with friends, he follows her. However, he cannot readily locate her. He reads the thoughts of others and tracks her smell only to find her corned by four men threatening to assault her. Edward rescues her but is fulminating with rage as he wants to destroy the men. Bella comforts him and the two continue to learn more about each other at a local restaurant.

Bella correctly guesses that Edward is a vampire, with the help of a conversation with Jacob Black about a Quileute legend. Bella interrogates him about vampiric habits, and Bella's classmates interrogate her about her relationship with Edward. In turn, Edward seeks Alice's advice pursuant to her visions. He fears the outcome of his relationship with Bella as one of Alice's visions captures Bella as a vampire. Edward finds the Blacks at Bella's as his presence complicates the vampires' treaty with the Quileutes. Alice sees a myriad of visions regarding Edward and Bella's relationship; she sees their futures knotted together culminating in a meadow.

Edward takes her to the meadow to expose Bella to his form in the sunlight, ablaze. She accepts him unconditionally. The two experience their first kiss and embrace; their chemistry palpable. Although Edward still fears he may turn Bella into a vampire, he finds the temptation of the blood to simply be a matter of self-control. He brings her home to meet the family, but Rose, jealous of both Bella's humanness and Edward's attraction to her, refuses to meet her. Bella attends the family baseball game during a thunderstorm that covers the noise of their supernatural play.

While playing, three unexpected vampires find them and one, James, is a tracker. He has special tracking skills and has latched on to Bella's scent. The Cullens split up and plot to destroy James, and protect Bella. Bella suggests she return to Phoenix while the others bait James. Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett lure James to the deep Canadian wilderness, while Alice and Jasper accompany Bella to Arizona. James outwits them, heads to Phoenix, and lures Bella away from Alice with a ruse about Bella's mom, Renee. He uses an old videotape to get Bella to believe Renee is trapped in Bella's former dance studio. Although Alice can see visions, she cannot locate Bella.

Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett join Jasper and Alice and race to find Bella before it is too late. When they locate her, she is barely conscious and covered in blood. Emmett and Jasper attack and destroy James. Carlisle tends to Bella's wounds, but James has bitten her hand and Edward must remove the venom. This involves an extraordinary amount of discipline on his part as he could turn Bella into a vampire. Bella is hospitalized, and the Cullens manufacture a cover story for the events that have unfolded. Edward watches over her with the heavy knowledge that his time with her is limited as he does not want to endanger her. Bella's mom arrives, and Charlie is informed of the events.

Once Bella is out of danger, she returns to Forks and Alice helps her as she recovers. Alice orchestrates Bella's attendance at the prom with Edward as her escort. As it is a surprise, Bella momentarily thinks perhaps Edward is going to change her into a vampire. Yet Edward has no intention of doing so as he does not want to hurt her. Jacob Black comes to the dance to again warn Bella of the Cullens at his father's behest. The work ends with Bella and Edward embracing, Edward kissing Bella's throat.
