Chapter 4 Summary
The narrator begins to settle in at his new apartment and ventures into the town to shop for furnishings. He enters a junk shop and is assisted by a salesman wearing purple eye shadow on only his left eye. He explains he has tried wearing it on both eyes once, but it upsets the shop owner, who sits in the rear of the store. Now the salesman wears it on only the left eye and is convinced the owner does not know, as the salesman always keeps his right side in the owner's field of vision. When the narrator returns to the shop, the salesman is gone so he speaks with the owner.
