Paris, 1937-1938
Both Ferrar and de Lyon live in Paris, which has not yet been dramatically changed by the war preparations that have gripped other countries. Paris is one of the few settings where life carries on as normal: Ferrar still goes to work at his law firm every day, and the pair go to fine restaurants and night clubs. While there is no overt violence or threat of war in Paris, there are still more subtle war efforts being made: the Marquesa freely moves about Paris as a double-agent, attempting to seduce Ferrar.
Berlin, 1938
When Ferrar and de Lyon travel together to Berlin as part of an arms deal, they are astonished to discover that the city has essentially transformed into a war machine.
