Summary
On February 15, Ferrar and de Lyon begin an 18-hour train ride from Paris to Berlin in order to complete the deal with Szarny. They have elected to take the train, instead of flying, because of de Lyon's worries about attracting attention from airport security. Still, the pair of men attract suspicion on the train, and they are pulled into a Gestapo office for further questioning. Ferrar and de Lyon have arranged a backstory where they are the publishers of nudist magazines, and hand a "sample" to the officer. The ruse works, and as Ferrar and de Lyon continue into Berlin, they are amazed at the industrial wasteland the city has become. On a newsstand, they see that Teruel has been successfully taken by Franco's Nationalist forces.
