Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station
The Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station was built in Eastern Ukraine and consisted of four independently operating reactor units that supplied energy to the Soviet grid. It was an RMBK-1000 style nuclear reactor only used in the Soviet Union, that used graphite as a moderator and water as a coolant, which was cheaper than using just graphite or just water, but also more dangerous.
The City of Pripyat
The City of Pripyat was built three kilometers away from the Chernobyl AES for plant workers and their families to live in. It was luxurious by the living standards of most Soviet workers, and was home to many growing families and young idealists. It was so irradiated by the Chernobyl explosion that no one has been able to live in it since.
