Summary

Ysbeta shows Beatrice a secret book in Chapter 13. Beatrice uses a spell to read the title: “Hazel and Chestnut: The Hidden Path of Women” (219). The book proves that there is a hidden network of women practicing magic. Back at Lavan House, Ysbeta summons Elamin, spirit of joy, to make Bard fall in love with someone else. Beatrice tries to take the spirit out but Ysbeta insists she has everything under control.

Ianthe catches Ysbeta and Beatrice in Chapter 14. He warns them to stop messing around with conjurations. It is dangerous and punishable by death for women. On the ride home, Ianthe begs Beatrice to choose between magic and marriage. Beatrice arrives home to Harriet crying.
