Summary
The Clayborn family have dinner in Chapter 4. Father is thrilled with Beatrice for befriending Ysbeta. He warns Beatrice not to cross her. Beatrice and Harriet go out riding. Harriet tells Beatrice that Father mortgaged their home so that Beatrice would have all the fineries necessary for bargaining season. The girls run into Ianthe, who is riding with his friends Sir Ellis Robicheaux and Bard Sheldon. They invite Beatrice to their card party, and she accepts. Afterwards, Harriet scolds her, as a gentleman’s card party is an unseemly place for a lady to be seen.
In Chapter 5, Ysbeta sends a carriage to bring Beatrice to Lavan House. Beatrice is impressed by the lavishness of both the carriage and house. Beatrice explains to Ysbeta how one goes about learning how to read a grimoire. Ysbeta promises to give Beatrice the grimoire she wants once...
