Chapters 27 through 34 Summary

In chapter twenty-seven, Michael goes to Jack's house, which is about twelve blocks from Michael's apartment building in a poor neighborhood. There are several cars sitting around the house but most look like they won't run at all. Michael knocks and Jack comes to the door. Michael tells Jack he needs a ride to Pasadena. Jack hesitates, asking why Michael's father can't take him. Michael says his father is dead. Jack then asks why Michael's mother can't take him and Michael says his mother has been kidnapped and he believes she's in Pasadena. He offers to pay Jack three hundred dollars, which is all the money his mother had saved in an "emergency stash." Jack says Michael should call the police but Michael says the police can't help.
