Summary
Chapter 16 opens with Noemí visiting Catalina in her room. Florence had appointed Mary to watch over them, so they were unable to speak privately. Catalina requested that Noemí read a particular poem. As Noemí opened the book to read, she found a yellowed piece of paper, which she pocketed. After leaving the room, she unfolded the paper and saw that Catalina had written “This is proof” (171) on one corner. The paper appeared to be torn from a diary and signed “R,” which Noemí interpreted as Ruth’s signature. The entry included a declaration to “remain firm in my resolve” (171). It mentioned whispering voices and “Our lord and master” (172), who was described as an “egg, split asunder, and a mighty serpent rising from it, expanding wide its jaws” (172).
