Summary
In Chapter 13, Noemí was planning on playing cards with Catalina using the deck she had bought in town. Noemí handed Catalina the bottle of medicine from Marta. Catalina took four teaspoons and began to shiver and convulse. Francis and Florence appeared, responding to Noemí’s cries, and Florence ordered Noemí out of the room. Francis left to bring back Dr. Cummins. Once Dr. Cummins had seen Catalina, he told Noemí that Catalina was sleeping and appeared to have recovered. However, Florence had found Marta’s remedy, which she claimed was an opium tincture, presumably based on Dr. Cummin’s assessment. Florence demanded to know where Noemí had obtained the medicine, but Noemí refused to say. Virgil asked to speak with Noemí alone, and accused her of giving Catalina poison. Noemí disliked the way Virgil was talking to her, but she also felt guilty...
