Chapters 8-9 Summary
In chapter eight, Theresa arrives at Garrett's for dinner. Theresa looks around Garrett's house and finds a picture of his wife on the nightstand beside the bed. Theresa admires Catherine's beauty. Garrett begins cooking steaks on the grill as they once again fall into easy conversation. As they prepare dinner together and talk, Garrett again remembers an afternoon with his wife when she appeared ill even though she swore she was fine. At the same time, Theresa is in the house setting the table, lighting candles rather than ruining the ambiance with electric lighting. After dinner, Theresa and Garrett go on another long walk along the beach, sharing stories about their childhoods, their relationships, and Kevin. Soon they find themselves kissing. Theresa takes Garrett into the bedroom and they make love. Sometime during the night, Theresa wakes to find Garrett gone...
