Part Three, Chapter 18 Summary
Cam testifies for the prosecution the next morning and gives his account of the events the afternoon of Maggie's death clearly and without compassion. However, Allie is sitting in the courtroom. Cam spends the entire time he is on the stand staring at her with a look of profound sorrow on his face. Jamie recognizes the look and begins to wonder what is happening between Cam and Allie. During a recess, Jamie convinces Allie to tell him what has happened. Allie confesses the whole story, from her discovery of the affair through her night with the stranger from the bar. Jamie listens to her and suddenly gains insight into his own relationship with Maggie. By reacting the way she did to Cam's affair, Allie has changed the dynamics of their relationship. Jamie wonders if he had refused to kill...
