Summary
In Chapter 8, Evelyn heads to the Mercy House attic so she can go through the records of their former residents. We get a brief flash to how Mercy House was created by the three sisters, Evelyn, Josephine, and Maria, when the three of them were living in the same convent. Most of the last 25 years of Evelyn’s life have been dedicated to Mercy House, with the exception of nursing during 9/11 and during the AIDS crisis.
Throughout this chapter, Evelyn goes through the records of former residents to get rid of incriminating evidence. Although it is not written down, Evelyn remembers times she’s helped women get abortions. Evelyn is deeply conflicted about abortions, but understands the importance of them to many women. We see through flashbacks that Josephine goes through the same conflicting emotions but eventually comes down on the side...
