Summary
In Chapter 9, Jamie tells Merci to put a note on Michael's desk. She does and the class soon leaves for an assembly to talk about raising money through selling wrapping paper. Merci overhears conversations during the assembly that the note was from Edna. She wrote that she liked him she asked if he liked her. Merci is not sure why the idea that she delivered “a love note” makes her angry. At the end of assembly, David slows down enough to tell Edna that “Michael says maybe” (125). Merci laughs at the “dumb” response which makes Edna angry. She comments that Merci is “not exactly up on these things” (126) and that she is still acting like a kid. Merci responds by saying, “When my mother says maybe, she usually means probably not” (126).
