Ralph's indoctrination into manhood is short but exquisite. Afterward Lil tells him to come anytime he has ten guineas to spare, and he leaves feeling like a man. The only surprise is how long it takes to get back to Zouga, but his response is predictable. A gentleman through and through, he is livid that his son has associated himself with such trash. Ralph, still feeling his manhood, warns Zouga he is prepared to defend himself to Jordan's horror who watches the entire event. Ralph soon learns how Zourga came to be named the fist, Bakela, by the Matabele and once on the ground and no longer feeling the urge to fight, Zouga calls for Jan Cheroot to take him to the doctors for stitches and mercury pills to guard against clap.
