Summary
In Chapter 7, “Miriam, 1995,” while drinking with August in the Memphis house kitchen, Miriam remembered the house’s history. With “the children asleep,” the sisters could talk freely (52). August told Miriam “Derek’s daddy” had died “in a knife fight” (52, 53). Miriam questioned August about her faith. August “did not share [Miriam’s] faith” (53). Although the sisters were close, Miriam knew the history of violence between their children would complicate their new life together. Recalling Joan’s pain, Miriam asked August if she was “a bad mom” (55). August consoled Miriam. Miriam warned August that Joan might kill Derek (57). The sisters also discussed Miriam’s plan to attend nursing school like Hazel.
