Summary
In Chapter 14, the Memory Police release the old man three days after arresting him. The narrator visits him right away and asks what happened. The old man explains that, apparently, some islanders recently escaped the island by boat. The MP interrogated the old man since he used to operate the ferry before it was outlawed. The old man knew nothing about the escapees, and he did not tell the MP about R. Soon after the old man is released, R’s wife gives birth to her and R’s first child, a boy. The narrator gives R a letter from his wife, who hopes that R will soon be able to come out of hiding and see his child.
