Culturally, Medusa’s most defining feature is her hair: a den of live snakes emerging from her head. In this poem, the speaker gives the snakes distinct personalities and a relationship with the title character. Her hair therefore symbolises her personal identity and individuality outside her dependent relationship. As her dependence grows, her hair is removed from the relationship. Once she begins her journey back to independence, her hair begins to grow back.
