Car Accident

Moth's family's car accident is a symbol of loss. After the accident, Moth loses her entire family. She then becomes dislocated from reality. Although she also dies, she believes that she is still living, and is thus trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead. Losing her life, therefore, has fractured her identity. She becomes trapped between these opposing realms, because she is reluctant to let go of the existence she was just learning to embrace.

New York City

New York City is a symbol of the past. Because this is where Moth and her family live before the car accident, Moth often remembers the place with fondness and longing. The city is a representation of the life she had before the accident, and the energetic vibrance she once believed were parts of her identity.
