Moth

Moth is the main character and the first person narrator of the novel. Two years prior to the narrative present, while on a road trip from New York City to Virginia, Moth and her family get into a car accident. They are all taken to the hospital. Only one person walks out alive.

After the accident, Moth goes to live with her Aunt Jack in Virginia. She feels alone and invisible. She is also plagued by guilt, believing that if she had not been so eager to live, her mother, father, and brother might have survived the accident. Although Moth once loved to dance, ever since the car accident, she has been unable to do so. Dancing makes her feel alive and happy, and she does not believe she is allowed to feel these things because her family is dead.
