Chapter 16 Summary
Pitt has his team of five divers from the NUMA ship—geophysicist Ken Knight, Stan Thomas, who is the ship's engineer, Lee Spencer, a marine biologist, Gustaf Hersong, another marine biologist, and Omar Woodson, the photographer armed only with his camera. They head for the quiet waters underneath the cliffs that Pitt had noticed earlier. It does not take them any more than five minutes to discover the underwater entrance to the cave. However, the first cave is deserted and Pitt simply does not believe his eyes. He is so sure of his theory that to find an empty cave does not agree with his conclusions. Just then one of the marine biologists shows Pitt a piece of brown algae but then reveals that it is plastic. It is a perfect replica of the sea growth, designed to disguise a second cave...
