Chapter 3 Summary
Pitt journeys out to the First Attempt, the NUMA boat for which he is charged with maintaining security. The First Attempt is a small ship, eight-hundred and twenty tons, one hundred fifty-two feet in length. She was originally made to be an ocean-going tugboat in the Dutch shipyards before World War II. She was slipped to England just after the Germans invaded and served throughout the war on the side of the Allies. The National Underwater Marine Agency purchased her from the Navy and she became a NUMA boat, a modern oceanographic vessel. Aboard is his friend, the commander of the vessel, Rudi Gunn. Gunn requested Dirk's help because he is troubled by all the problems they have been having since they anchored off the coast of Thasos.
