Summary
In Chapter 52, "Mothers," Lori relates to Wendell an argument she had with her son the other night, only to realize it was a case of "classic displacement." She was angry with her mom, she realized, and projected her anger onto her son. He, too, had displaced his emotions, it turned out. He was upset with some boys at school and took it out on her. Lori tells Wendell that she apologized to hermit and they worked it out. She realizes that as much as she claims to be dramatically different from her mother, there times when she is quite similar. She confesses to Wendell that she has been saving her mom's phone messages on her computer, the warm and sweet ones that she will want to hear she she is no longer with her.
