Summary

Part Four opens with Chapter 46, which is titled, “The Bees." Lori is late to her appointment with Charlotte because she was on her phone with her dad, who was in the hospital. She can tell Charlotte is upset, but tries to play it off coolly. Charlotte tells Lori she is going to take a break from therapy. At the same moment, Lori notices a swarm of bees outside the window. Charlotte sees them too. She tells Lori how she used to want to be a beekeeper. This feels oddly appropriate to Lori. She can see the appeal for Charlotte in having that kind of control over danger, especially if you grew up feeling like you had none. Lori tells Charlotte she supports whatever decision she makes.
