Point of View
Maybe in Another Life is written from the main character Hannah Martin’s first person point of view. This narrative stance locates the narrative stakes within Hannah’s distinct life and consciousness. She is telling her story in her own words. “It’s a good thing I booked an aisle seat,” she begins the novel, “because I’m the last one on the plane. I knew I’d be late for my flight. I’m late for almost everything” (1). The way in which Hannah describes herself is honest and open. She is speaking from her perspective, and describing her character and world the way she sees and understands them. Her narrative vantage therefore dictates the novel’s central stakes and its particular manner of unfolding.
