Importance: Ever since Hannah's parents and sister moved to London when she was 16, Hannah has been searching for a sense of family and belonging. It is not, however, until she is flying from New York back to Los Angeles, that she realizes the reason she has been moving from city to city throughout her adult life. Each move she has made has been her own decision. However, each decision has originated from her longing for home. This moment from the novel's opening scene incites Hannah's search for home and belonging following her move back to California. The moment also introduces the author's interests in exploring the ways in which home and belonging are not always limited to a geographical location.
