Hannah Martin
Hannah Martin is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. Hannah grows up in Los Angeles with her parents, Doug and Maureen, and her sister, Sarah. When Hannah is 16, Sarah is accepted into the Royal Ballet School, inspiring her family to relocate to London. Instead of going with them, Hannah decides to stay behind in California. She ends up moving in with her best friend, Gabby, and her parents, Carl and Tina.
When Hannah graduates from high school, she moves to Boston for college. Over the course of the following years, Hannah proves incapable of settling down or sitting still. She ends up moving “to D.C., then Portland, Oregon. Then Seattle. Then Austin, Texas. Then New York” (3).
