Matigari ma Njirũũngi
Matigari is the protagonist of the novel, which is named after him. Though many details about Matigari are unknown, it is known that he was once part of the revolutionary struggle against a man known as Settler Williams. (Williams is implied to be an allegorical symbol for all of colonialism.) However, Matigari's and other revolutionaries’ success in defeating Settler Williams is only temporary, as future generations--including Williams' son, Robert--join forces with locals in order to oppress the masses. The story begins with Matigari’s determination to reclaim his home following the death of Settler Williams.
