Summary

Matigari ma Njirũũngi and Ngarũro wa Kirĩro escape from the mental hospital, along with a number of other patients. Meanwhile, the Voice of Truth announces over the radio that the British and European Community have given the country a sizeable loan for “handcuffs, band and leg chains, uniforms for prison warders, electric fences to help guard the prisons and ropes for hanging those who have been sentenced to death” (112). The radio announcements continue, with various updates on the government’s attempts to locate the madmen. The police, influenced by the recent loans, announce that they will not be targeted any white people “even if they are dressed in rags and dirty clothes” (114). An announcement reveals that Ngarũro wa Kirĩro has been shot by police. Matigari remains free.
