Betrayal
Betrayal is a major theme in the novel "Masquerade" by Melissa De La Cruz. It appears everywhere throughout the book, pertaining to the mystery of the return of the Silver Bloods.
Betrayal first appears in a familial form, when Schuyler goes to seek out her grandfather Lawrence, in Venice, Italy. In Venice, Lawrence refuses to return to New York with Schuyler, and insists he is not the one to defeat the Silver Bloods. It is an apparent betrayal to his own kind, for refusing to help. But it is not a true betrayal as Lawrence later returns in triumph to assist his granddaughter.
