Summary
Michigan, p. 73 – 93. Cat describes waking up the next morning in Marlena’s bed, hungover and barely dressed. She describes rushing out of the house to get back home, barely noting Marlena’s father. Shortly afterwards, Cat writes, her mother took her along to help her clean a house, one belonging to the wealthy Hodson family. Cat describes how her mother had been a success at school and at music, but had quit college partly because she was restless, and partly because she was pregnant with Jimmy. While cleaning the house, Cat says that she was struck by the size and openness of the place, even though she was sick with a hangover. As she describes waiting for her mother to finish, she says she still believes “that at that moment, I hadn’t yet made any decisions. I swear” (81).
