Summary

In Chapter 13, after Lydia’s first trip to the beach – and the subsequent noticeable improvement in her condition – Agnes agreed to commit to a regular routine of taking her outdoors. However, shortly after this routine began, Lydia’s health started to steadily deteriorate. Eventually, she died. A few weeks after the funeral, Agnes decided to leave New York and move back to rural Minnesota with her relatives. Around the same time that Agnes made this decision, Anna learned that Lieutenant Axel had changed his mind, and that she would be allowed to dive. She persuaded her mother to let her stay behind in their Brooklyn apartment, on her own.
