Summary

11: Lance and his family settled in Salinas, California where Lance started high school. Lance struggled to make friends at first but eventually fell in with a group of boys that included an older teen named Ryan, whom Lance recognized as closeted. Away from their Mormon religious community, Lance began to question some of the truths he was taught as a child, though his mother remained very religious despite no longer attending church. Lance and Ryan became good friends, which helped Lance's confidence grow, though they never discussed their shared sexual orientation. By becoming more involved with local community theatre, Lance also realized that he and Ryan were not alone.
